Today
SGT. Alex Dunn and CPL Luis Cardona met a group of high school students
at SIS and spoke about their life as Marines guarding the U.S. Embassy.
The two Marines are in their early twenties and both joined after
completing high school. SGT Dunn is the son of a Marine family and
spoke about his attitude in preparing for the rigors of basic training
and the pride he takes in being a member of the extended U.S. Marine
Corps family. He noted his prior service in Poland at the U.S. Embassy
in Warsaw and explained that he wanted to profit from his service time
so that, when he returns to civilian life, he will be more competitive
in the workplace than those who may not have had similar training,
discipline and travel. CPL Cardona explained how he’d noted that a
friend, older than him, had returned to town more fit and disciplined
after his own stint with the Marines and that this example had
emboldened him to try the same. He was training as a electronic
technician and looks forward to returning to this trade as a civilian,
but with added advantage of travel to Asia, the Middle East and Germany
and perhaps South America. When asked why it is that more than a few
U.S. corporations are headed by former Marines, SGT Dunn noted that the
character building of the Corps offers corporate America the kinds of
qualities needed for business leaders. The students thanked the two for
their visit to SIS and wished them success in their work and hoped that
they would enjoy their stay in Yemen.
